The mid-Atlantic Ridge is a spreading of the Earth's crust. Magma is rising up and cooling at this spot. As the magma cools, it pushes each plate away from the Ridge. The age of rocks can tell you which way the plates are moving.
Younger rocks are closer to the ridge. Older rocks are further away from the ridge. What is the mid-atlantic ridge?what is happening there?how does this affect plate movement?
The mid Atlantic ride is one the the main ocean ridge systems. The Atlantic ridge is where divergent boundaries are. divergent boundaries are where two plates move apart. So when the two plates diverge magma spurs out and creates new oceanic lithosphere. This process is called sea floor spreading. rocks confirm this because rocks (igneous) at the top of the mid Atlantic ridge are very young because they were just created by magma. If you were to get rocks deeper down you would see that something like sea floor spreading has occurred.
