My roof doesn't need replacing yet but I would like to consider putting in a ridge vent. Is this possible?

Yes this IS possible. You need only to remove the existing ridge caps and possibly cut back some of the roof boards at the top of the roof a couple inches for air ventilation and install new ridge vent. One experience d roofer could do this job in less than a day.My roof doesn't need replacing yet but I would like to consider putting in a ridge vent. If your roof is not ready to replace yet and it is more than half way through its life don't put on a ridge vent. The payback will not be enough to cover the cost of the installation. Just wait till you are ready to replace the roof and install one then. I know that a ridge vent is the way to go but check out the cost and make your own decision. If your roof is only a couple years old go for it. Just be sure you are not spending more money than you will save on energy cost. Spend your money on something like a radiant barrier or more insulation to try to ease your energy bill that will be there for a while. I know I will get thumbs down for this answer but its the way that I feel.My roof doesn't need replacing yet but I would like to consider putting in a ridge vent. Is this possible?
Sure, remove the ridge cap shingles, then mark down 1-1/2-2'; from the ridge on both sides at both ends 1' from the end of your ridges. Snap a chalk line the entire length of the roof on both sides. Cut and remove the shingles down to this line using a utility knife with a ';hook'; blade. Then check for nails along that line and remove them. Take a circular saw and cut the line, set your saw so that it just cuts through the sheathing and not into the trusses/rafters. You can purchase either a prefinished metal or shingle over ridge vent product to install over the hole that you've just made. Seal the nail heads with a tube of ';black majic'; roofing sealer. Make sure that you wear safety glasses when cutting through the roof sheathing.
Yes, very easy. You just might have a challenge matching the shingles. Ridge vents only work well if you have sufficient soffit vents as well.

Also, you'll need to remove whirlybirds and other kinds of vents or the ridge will vent from them rather than from the soffit lower down.
Yes you can add a ridge vent without replacing the roofing. Make sure u either have leftover shingles from when the roof was done, or find the same shingles at a roofing supply store. You also would benefit from putting in soffit vents to create cross ventilation. Good Luck.
You can cut the vent with a skill saw. You will need 2 blades. Just cut a line on each side of the ridge. Then install your raised cap
It would actually be fairly easy since the ridge is the last thing to be installed on a roof.
Yes it is--and that would be a good thing cause you can save on electric by keeping the top of home cool.
listen to ken b. my only different thought is is to use rubber head ring shank nails.
